Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) and Credit Transfer is an evidence-based, equitable, and transparent process that assesses prior learning and/or experience, resulting in course credit, which exempts a student from enrolment in a particular subject.

Kenvale College recognises the value of prior learning and experience. All students who attend the college are entitled to apply for RPL for the course in which they are enrolled. All applications will be assessed equitably and fairly by the college.

What is a Course Credit?

Course credit is exemption from enrolment in a particular subject as a result of previous study (Credit Transfer) or experience held (Recognition of Prior Learning – RPL)

Which forms of learning may I obtain Course Credits for?

The college recognises the value of prior learning. Students may apply for course credit in recognition of prior learning (RPL) obtained in any of the following ways:

Formal Study

Students may apply for credit where they have completed a subject or subjects at a recognised tertiary institution. Students apply by submitting the Recognition of Prior Learning Application Form to the Head of Hospitality, Cookery and Events ( ) and attaching documentary evidence of satisfactory completion of a similar subject(s).

The following documents must be submitted:

  • Transcript/results (an explanation of grades must be attached)
  • Detailed subject outlines specifying subject content, assessment and duration (i.e. total no of hours of course)
  • Statement of attainment (if applicable)
  • Certificate / Award (if applicable)

Where qualifications documentation is in a language other than English, applicants are required to have the qualifications documentation translated into English using the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI). The college is not responsible for any costs associated with the translation of qualifications documentation.


Exemptions will only to be granted where it can be shown that the student has successfully completed other studies that are:

  • of a similar duration,
  • studied at a similar or higher level
  • of similar content

The college will recognise AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other RTOs.

The college will recognise qualifications from other countries as long as they meet the above-mentioned criteria.

Work Experience

Applicants who possess at least five consecutive years full time, or equivalent, work experience in a relevant field, which satisfies the learning outcomes for a subject they are enrolled in, may be eligible for a subject exemption. Applications for RPL based on extensive work experience must be evidence-based. Accordingly, all applications for RPL will result in an assessment to determine the applicant’s competency level for the subject.

Course Credit by Assessment

Students who believe they are already competent in a subject, and who do not have formal qualifications may undertake an assessment, usually in the form of an examination, to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning outcomes of a particular subject through prior learning. The student must achieve at least 70% in the assessment to be granted an exemption. Students may submit evidence of their prior learning to support their application: e.g. portfolio of evidence, references from past employers, and testimonials of learning, skill or competence.

Students apply by submitting the Recognition of Prior Learning Application Form to the Head of Hospitality, Cookery and Events ( along with the written submissions required in the application form.

Credit Transfer through Cross Institutional Enrolment

Students should seek the permission of the Academic Director prior to enrolling in studies with another institution that they will later seek to credit toward their Kenvale course. Upon successful completion of the course at the other institution, it is the student’s responsibility to submit an application for credit transfer to the Academic Director and attach a copy of the official results obtained at the other institution.

How do I Apply for RPL?

1. Complete the relevant Kenvale College Application Form to gain entry into your desired course.

2. Complete the Application Form for Recognition of Prior Learning.

3. Provide all previous qualifications and documents required by the application form. e.g. Certificates, Transcripts, Course Outlines or Course Descriptions.

Please note that copies of original documents must be certified by a suitable person (a Justice of the Peace (JP)) to be a true copy of the original transcripts.

4. Provide all other required documentation detailed in the checklist at the end of your Application Form.

5. Submit all documents to or attach them online to our online Application Form.

6. Following the interview process, the Head of Hospitality, Cookery and Events will then assess the application based on the evidence submitted. The Head of Hospitality, Cookery and Events may request further evidence such as a demonstration or the sitting of the relevant examination if the evidence submitted in the application is not deemed adequate in terms of authenticity, validity, reliability, currency or sufficiency.

7. The student will be advised in writing of the outcome of the application. If unsuccessful, the student has the right to appeal using the complaints and appeals process.

If successful, the subject will be recorded as ‘RPL’ on the student’s academic transcript.  The student has no further commitment, assessment or financial requirement of the subject for which exemption has been given.

Students are required to sign (or otherwise accept) the record of the course credit.

A copy of the RPL will be kept on the student’s file.

International Students

If the college grants an international student course credit which leads to a shortening of the student’s course before the student visa is granted, the CoE will indicate the actual net course duration for the course.

If the course credit is granted after the student visa is granted, the change of course duration will be reported to DET via PRISMS within 14 days after the credit is granted.
