Cocktails are increasing in popularity.

If you were asked what Australia's most popular alcoholic beverages are, it's likely you'd reply, "beer and wine". However, this answer is only half right.

While beer makes up 45 per cent of beverage purchases, spirits (33 per cent) are much more popular than wine (19 per cent) according to mobile-payment and deals app Clipp. In fact, vodka was recorded as the most popular spirit – the base of a plethora of cocktails.

It's then apt that there is an annual World Class Cocktail Week which culminates with World Cocktail Day on May 13!

Celebrating great cocktails

Described as the "biggest edition ever", World Class Cocktail week will encompass over 100 events across Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane between May 7 and 13.

In Sydney, there will be more than 40 events at various bars and restaurants. This includes margarita and taco masterclasses at Barrio Cellar, Asian-inspired cocktails at Longrain and a whisky and gelato pairing at The Wild Rover.

Australia's World Class Ambassador Natalie Ng explained why Cocktail Week is so important to the hospitality industry.

"Shining a light on some of Australia's best hospitality talent, World Class Cocktail Week celebrates the skill, creativity and inspiration that goes into creating cocktails," she said.

"The events provide a fantastic opportunity for venues to showcase what they are best at and guests to experience cocktails in new, fun and interactive ways."

This is certainly what sets cocktails apart from other beverages such as beer and wine. The combinations are almost endless and creative bartenders can build a drink that nobody has ever had before.

As a celebration of cocktails, these events also inspire the next generation to pursue this career path.
