What are the benefits of being a chef?

If you have a talent and passion for cooking and a desire to serve delicious food to customers, then becoming a chef is the career for you.

According to Go Study Australia, there are more than 75,000 chefs currently across the country, a number that continues to grow as new restaurants and cafes pop up. For every budding chef at Kenvale College, there is a reason behind their decision to commit to this profession. This could because of their love of cooking, their family operates a restaurant and they want to become a celebratory chef or are keen to open their own cafe or restaurant in the future.

So, apart from passion for food and cooking and wanting to serve customers, what are some of the other benefits that you may not have thought of? Read on find out.

1) Understanding nutritional information

While it will depend on the cuisine, by working with food on an everyday basis, chefs get a great understanding of the nutritional information surrounding different products.

In time, it is then possible to produce healthy, tasty food, not only for customers, but for family, friends and themselves. If there was anyone who knew the nutritional value of food, it would be a chef!

2) Respect as an artist

In the same way that an artist manipulates their paints to form a picture, a chef prepares various food products to form a cohesive, tasty and visually-appealing artistic dish. Many people consider chefs to be artists as their skill or craft is not one that everyone can achieve.

After a great meal in a restaurant, rather than sending their thanks to the owner, customers will often send thanks to the chef – as it is the chefs that set the tone for the entire experience. If the food isn't good and not visually appealing, there is little chance that customers will return again.

3) No two days are the same

If you have ever had a desk job, you'll understand how boring it can be. However, in the kitchen, you'll rarely have a boring day and you'll be able to interact with new people on a regular basis. Whether it's other cooks, waiters, customers or other industry colleagues, you'll be able to share your thoughts and share experiences, building relationships within this diverse industry.

Food is a universal language, allowing trained and professional chefs to explore the world and gain valuable experience along the way.

Many countries around the globe are always looking for chefs, so you have the chance to become an important part of this exciting international sector. Upon returning to Australia after working overseas, your advanced skills and knowledge could help you position a strong career back home.

I just wanted to express thanks and congratulations to all at Kenvale for the magnificent lunch provided on Thursday.

I have been to many hatted restaurants this year and can honestly say that they would have struggled to produce such fantastic dishes.

The lunch was a credit to your students and your staff.  It would be a privilege to enjoy another visit next year.
