Sydney is Australia's event capital, hosting tens of thousands of occasions each year. Whether these are award dinners, fashion shows, charity auctions, business conferences or any other events involving a large group of people, Sydney enjoys hosting a plethora of celebrations and ceremonies.
However, as the city's event calendar began filling up, a new solution was required. As such, the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre was demolished in 2013 to make way for the International Convention Centre Sydney (ICC Sydney). Funded by both the NSW government and Darling Harbour Live, the innovative ICC Sydney is just weeks away from its official opening – marking an exciting time for the city's event management community.
Opportunities for skilled professionals
Before the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre was closed, Kenvale College was a major partner of the facility, with a number of our students plying their trade at the venue. As preparations ramp up for the official opening of ICC Sydney, Kenvale College students are again in hot demand with several being recruited for this amazing facility.
The recruitment team from ICC Sydney have been welcome visitors over the past two years at Kenvale College, addressing our Hospitality and Events students twice this year, and once in 2015. As well as this, they have attended our last two annual Winefests, and our pop-up Kenvale Restaurant – highlighting the value that they see in our students.
Our Commercial Cookery Students were also lucky enough to meet ICC Sydney's Executive Sous Chef Constantin Kautz, learning some of the key elements of becoming a professional chef in the future.
More recently, Kenvale College officials were invited to the first gala dinner at the venue – a pre-opening event to test everything was on track.
CEO of ICC Sydney Geoff Donaghy outlined the scope of further employment at ICC Sydney.
"The venue will employ at least 300 full time staff and a further 1,500 casual workers, as well as support local food and wine industries," he noted.
Events already locked in
Despite the fact that ICC Sydney is yet to open its doors, the city is already seeing solid economic investment.
According to the NSW government, the world-leading facilities will contribute $5 billion to the state economy over the next 25 years – based on predicted tourism numbers alone.
Mr Donaghy also explained that a number of events are booked for the venue.
"We already have more than 400 events locked in, including world leading exhibits like The Hunger Games: The Exhibition and performances from international superstars Keith Urban and PJ Harvey, with hundreds of others in the pipeline," he said.
For event management and hospitality students, ICC Sydney represents a bright future. Although not everyone can work at the venue, the more that Sydney grows in terms of an international destination, the more such centres that will open.
As such, the key is to obtain and develop those in-demand skills – giving you the best chance to work at ICC Sydney and similar places in the future.
